Elena – 5-6 year old female Cross-Breed

Elena is a five to six year old female Cross-Breed who is medium to large in size and currently fostered in Marlborough, Wiltshire. She can live with or without other dogs, can live with children of all ages, and has not yet been cat tested, though she may be suitable. We met Elena in March this year when we visited the Boto?ani public shelter in Romania. She had a badly twisted front leg. She had two operations to try and fix the damaged limb, but sadly they didn’t work and it was ultimately amputated. Elena is the most joyous dog you could ever meet. Despite her surroundings in the grim shelter she remains bubbly and upbeat. She is friendly and affectionate and loves everyone she meets. Aspen is a 10 month old Beagle mix who’s life got off to a very rocky start. He was abandoned as a young puppy in Cyprus and found seriously unwell with parvovirus. After spending time in the vets and making a full recovery, he joined the shelter and eventually travelled to the UK as a foster. Since arriving, it’s been a bit of a journey for him, and it’s taken time to really understand what he needs to feel settled and secure. After struggling to find the right fit in a home environment, Aspen has spent the last couple of months in kennels, where he has surprised everyone with just how well he’s done. With clear routines, patient handling and consistent care, he has really come into himself. He’s responded brilliantly to basic training, built very strong relationships with the staff and grown hugely in confidence. Captain – 4 year old male Labrador Retriever Cross

Captain is a 4.5 year old, medium-sized, male, lab cross who was abandoned in Cyprus by his owner 9 months ago. We will never know his full story—maybe his family moved away, or maybe they just decided they no longer wanted him. Whatever the reason, Captain was left behind: alone, confused, and heartbroken. The fact that this boy is so loving and affectionate towards humans is a testament to him. Perhaps it’s because he knows exactly what he has lost and he longs to find that again. He adores being around humans and is just such a happy boy. He doesn’t deserve to be in a kennel. Captain has shown to be selective with other dogs so needs to be the only dog. For the trained eye, Toffee is canine perfection. He is stunningly good looking with his light tan coat with hints of darker brown. Raggie is a medium sized crossbreed aged around ten years old. Raggie fostered Norwich. Raggie was rescued from a kill shelter in Romania when he was a youngster and has lived in a private shelter since then. Despite having a nice place to stay all these years it was not a proper home and we really want his retirement to be something more comfortable. Raggie is a sweet and inquisitive boy who enjoys the company of other dogs and is absolutely fine with the safe rescue cat. Rocco – 2 year old male Cross-Breed

  Rocco is a medium sized crossbreed aged around two years old. Rocco fostered North Walsham Norfolk. Rocco is from, what followers of safe rescue know to be, the barking Bush in Crivatu Romania. It is an area of shrub land known to be used to dump rubbish, furniture, and unwanted dogs. We have a history of busting a gut to catch dumped dogs from this area before anything bad happens to them. In Rocco’s case he and one sibling escaped death by only twenty four hours. The day after volunteers managed to catch them and get them safe, the rest of the litter were mercilessly slaughtered and left in the rubbish. Whilst their siblings were being given a respectful burial, Rocco and his sister were being taken to a private shelter where they remained safe and cared for until we could take them here in the UK. Bruno is a 12–15 month old male Pointer currently in Spain and is expected to arrive in the UK at the end of July. For the past 15 years, Starfish has worked alongside a wonderful shelter in Spain called Noah’s ARC. Twice a year I travel there with my own dogs and spend several weeks helping at the shelter, and whenever possible I choose one or two dogs who I feel would really struggle to find homes in Spain and offer them a lifeline here in the UK. Bruno was a bit of a last-minute addition to Kyle and Jackson, but sometimes a dog just quietly works his way into your heart and makes the decision for you. I first noticed Bruno while we were carrying out an assessment on a new dog at the shelter, using parallel walking with Bruno alongside him. Tommy is a 1.5 year old male Cross-Breed, medium in size. He was rescued exactly a year ago from horrid circumstances, having been thrown into a yard with his sister, Suzy, at just a few weeks of age. They lived on piles of rubbish, frequently escaping due to inadequate fencing and roaming the streets among busy traffic, constantly in danger. When rescued, they were emaciated and full of parasites. Tommy and Suzy can be rehomed together or separately. Tilly – 2-year-old Cockapoo girl (approx. 10kg) Currently being fostered in Gloucestershire in an adult family home with multiple dogs. Tilly was originally homed by Starfish as a puppy and has recently come back into our care due to a change in her owner’s circumstances. This is absolutely no reflection on lovely little Tilly, who has done nothing wrong. We are heartbroken for her, as returns are something that very rarely happen within our rescue. When Tilly first arrived, our hearts broke for her. For several days she sat by the door waiting, barely eating and seeming very sad and withdrawn. It was clear she missed everything she had known and was struggling to understand why her world had suddenly changed. Reyna – 9 year old female Border Collie

Reyna is a medium Border Collie, 9 years old. Reyna is a beautiful Border Collie in foster in Cambridgeshire, her passport says she is 9 years old, although her vet believes she may actually be younger. Reyna came into the shelter with her three puppies, Ares, Sena and Zeus, after being surrendered by a family who had kept her outdoors for her entire life. We believe she may have spent much of that time chained up, with very little opportunity to interact with people, other dogs or the world around her. Her puppies are all in wonderful homes now, and although Reyna is going from strength to strength, we would love to find her a home of her own.
