Maddie – 12 year old female English Springer Spaniel

Maddie is a 12-year-old Springer Spaniel currently being fostered in Gloucestershire in an adult family home with other dogs.

Maddie recently joined the Starfish family after her previous owner sadly had to move and was unable to keep all of his dogs.

Maddie is an ex-working gundog and had spent her entire life living in kennels. Heartbreakingly, when her owner could no longer keep his dogs, Maddie was facing euthanasia simply because there was nowhere for her to go.

Thankfully, she is now safe with us and beginning the next chapter of her life.

Despite never having lived in a house before, Maddie has settled beautifully into home life. She is a typical Spaniel who simply craves love and companionship.

Wherever you are, she wants to be there too, usually lying beside you and making sure she’s touching you in some way. It is as though she is making up for all those years without the comforts of family life.

She is a gentle, affectionate soul who loves nothing more than being close to her people.

She loves her walks and is a pleasure to take out. She enjoys having a little wander but always loops back round to check in and stay close by your side.

She walks beautifully on the lead and travels well in the car.

Since coming into our care, Maddie has seen our vets and received treatment for ear mites. She has also been spayed and had a scale and polish, with no teeth needing to be removed.

She is clean in the house and sleeps happily in a crate overnight without any problems.

Her foster home has noticed that Maddie is a little hard of hearing, but this doesn’t affect her when out walking as she naturally keeps an eye on where you are.

The only thing we have observed is that if she is resting and another dog suddenly appears beside her or tries to join her on the sofa, she can give a grumble.

She has never shown any aggression beyond this and has never bitten another dog; we simply think she doesn’t appreciate being startled. When out and about she has no interest in other dogs and is happy to ignore them completely.

For this reason, we feel Maddie would be happiest as an only dog where she can enjoy a peaceful, relaxed home and all the attention from her humans.

That said, this isn’t completely set in stone. If you have an older, calm dog like Maddie, we would still be happy to consider your application.

The three dogs in her current foster home are all young and active, and we think she would simply prefer a quieter life. She is also perfectly happy being left for sensible periods and settles without any issues.

Maddie is now spayed, microchipped, has started her vaccinations, has been treated for worms and fleas, completed her treatment for ear mites, and has had a scale and polish.

If you feel you could offer this lovely older girl the retirement she deserves, please email us at starfishdogrescue@hotmail.co.uk to request our adoption questionnaire.
