Stratos – 2 year old male Pointer Cross

Meet Stratos, a 2 year old male Pointer Cross currently in Cyprus.

Upon meeting Stratos on a recent trip to Cyprus, I can honestly say this boy broke me. Huddled in a compound with many other dogs, Stratos struggled to be seen.

The dogs rushed the fencing for attention. Poor Stratos tried his best to get to the people, making some fuss. But he missed out, overcome by the crowd. His face was full of sorrow and sadness. The shelter team told me his passion is human interaction but rarely did he get it.

I managed to get him out of the compound for a little one to one time. His little face literally lit up when he saw I’d chosen him to come out.
He totally adored the attention, loved being fussed and stroked. He gave the best kisses ever.He pulled at my heartstrings like few dogs do.

The shelter team informed me he had Leishmania, treated without any issues, the remnants of which were still visible on his face, some fur loss that will grow back in time.

Stratos can still live a happy, healthy and long life with the condition. He’ll just need an inexpensive tablet a day to keep him healthy; that’s it.

Sadly, there’s some prejudice around Leishmania; many won’t want to give Stratos the chance he deserves to be adopted. The odds are heavily stacked against him. I realised then I had to help him. Having had a Leishmania dog myself, I knew he was just as worthy as the next.

Stratos is very good with people and most dogs. He isn’t great with more dominant boys, so he’d be better placed with non-dominant boys or any girl dogs.

He’s brilliant with children, too, enjoying their company, showing how gentle he can be.

Dogs like Stratos can end up languishing in shelters for an eternity. All it takes, though, is that one special person to see a very special dog who will give mountains of affection, love and loyalty to whoever rescues him.

I fell in love instantly with this sweet little boy. I’m hoping someone else will see past his condition and see what I saw, an awesome dog who has been let down badly, thrown on the streets because his owner saw he had Leishmania symptoms, an all too common practise in Cyprus.

Dumped like rubbish and now losing precious months trapped in a compound of dogs in a municipality shelter.

Please think about adopting dogs like Stratos. Dogs like him, with a pre-existing condition, are almost the last to be adopted, along with older dogs or bigger dogs; they all suffer months, sometimes years, of imprisonment through no fault of their own.

Be that special, incredible person to help a less fortunate dog like Stratos. The love and devotion he’ll show you will not compare.
