Max – 8 year old male German Shepherd Dog

Max is an absolutely gorgeous 8 year old male German Shepherd Dog who is in an Oldies Club foster home in Ramsbottom, Greater Manchester.

Poor Max had a lot of upheaval before he came into our care and so he took a while to settle at his foster home. He was very frightened and also a bit nervous-growly, but he’s now settled in well and is showing his truly wonderful, affectionate nature.

Max is fine about being left at home for up to about 4 hours. He does love to have company though, and all he really wants is to be with you, doing whatever you are doing. A home where people around most of the time would be perfect for Max.

Max has been good with the large dog in his foster home. He could be rehomed to live with a dog that is a similar size to himself. Max can be unpredictable with dogs he meets when out on walks, but in the home he is great with them.

We don’t know how Max is with cats so are looking for a cat-free home for him.

Max can be quite boisterous but he should be fine to live with older, sensible teenagers. His foster carer would not leave him unattended with younger children in case they grabbed his ears, or he accidentally knocked them over.

Max thoroughly enjoys his walks and he will walk for as long as you want to. He pulls at first due to excitement. His recall is OK, but it isn’t 100% reliable, and as Max is not to be trusted around livestock, he is only let off lead in secure areas. Max is happy to have one long walk per day of an hour or more, or to have three 30-minute walks per day. He has lots of energy and just loves to get out and about, and he gets restless if he hasn’t been out.

Max loves the car and he will jump in at any opportunity. He travels really well. He loves to play with tennis balls and squeaky/bouncy balls. He also likes to dig and bury his toys. Anything that involves water is also a big love of Max’s: he loves rivers and digging for rocks, and playing with the hosepipe.

He enjoys being brushed, and he likes to carry and bring you a cuddly toy. Passers by need to be barked at, by the gate, and Max is happy to step up and be the one to do that!

Loud noises, thunder and fireworks. He howls at sirens. He doesn’t like the vets and he also doesn’t like his ears being cleaned or touched for too long. He found a recent visit to the groomers very scary, so his new owner will instead need to brush him daily to keep his coat beautiful. Happily, Max loves being brushed.

He would love a busy home with interesting things going on. He is a big boy who needs lots of space and ideally a large garden. His new people will need to have experience of large breeds, preferably German Shepherds, and have plenty of time for training and providing interesting activities to keep Max’s brain busy.

Max is happy to sleep downstairs in the kitchen at night, but he will get on the sofa if he sees an opportunity.

Max is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and has been worm and flea treated. Keeping Max’s ears clean is problematic and they are prone to infections and get itchy. He has tablets daily to help with this.
