Poppet – 8 year old male Jack Russell Terrier
Poppet is an 8 year old male Jack Russell Terrier. He was rescued by the police from an overcrowded home where he and nine other dogs were living in impoverished conditions and lacking basic care.
All of the dogs were confiscated from the household in question and taken to my local shelter. Poppet was lucky enough to be offered a home in the UK in September 2022, but sadly things aren’t working out as hoped.
Poppet came from a home that had too many dogs and never had the focus or attention he needed.
In the shelter he shared a paddock with multiple other dogs, most of which were a lot bigger than him, meaning once again he was often overlooked due to him being in the shadow of bigger dogs with equally big personalities.

Now, in a home with another resident dog, it has become obvious that Poppet just wants that 1-2-1 attention for himself. He doesn’t display any aggression towards other dogs, it’s more than another dog can’t be getting any attention without Poppet interjecting.
We’re therefore looking for a home without other resident dogs where Poppet can truly be the apple of someone’s eye. He’s a people dog through and through and desperately craves being with someone all the time.
Poppet’s exceptionally loyal, affectionate and friendly when he’s formed a bond with someone and would be ideal for someone who is home a lot and looking for a companion to dote on. Poppet needs a calm household to thrive.

Poppet picks up on anxious energy easily and this can cause him to feel uncomfortable and unnerved, so a patient, confident adopter will help him to blossom. Poppet is extremely food motivated and despite his small size, he has the appetite of a horse.
Poppet responds well to positive reinforcement training and food as a reward, and he enjoys enrichment activities such as scatter feeding and emptying a stuffed kong toy.
Poppet is confident around new people and happy to make new friends wherever he goes (this applies to both dogs and people) and has an endearing personality, regularly charming new people with his ability to bond with strangers quickly. Poppet is great on the lead and loves his walks.

Poppet trots along happily on a short lead, or when on a long lead he loves having a little exploration. He enjoys the outdoors but due to his cruciate ligament rupture, his exercise does need to be limited at present.
To make up for this his family has trained Poppet to use a doggy backpack so he can still enjoy long walks with them whilst being wrapped up warm, which he loves as he’s a little bit older now and will always be a sun-seeking Cypriot pup.
Poppet is also a fantastic pub dog and settles down on his blanket with a chew quite happily whilst everyone enjoys a drink or two.

Poppet wants to be a lap dog and to be with someone all the time. He doesn’t enjoy spending time alone in the house and is looking for someone who can make him the centre of their world.
Poppet is so unbelievably affectionate and forming a trusting bond with him will be ever so rewarding as his confidence improves and he feels more at home.
Poppet does have an ongoing health investigation at the moment so his new family should be aware that there may be medical costs associated with his to ensure Poppet’s well-being, but we do also think some of the anxious behaviours he is currently displaying may be alleviated by a more suitable home setting.

Poppet has pain in his back legs associated with his sciatic nerve, and a ruptured cruciate ligament in his left hind leg.
Poppet’s also being tested for gastrointestinal issues. Poppet is not tested with cats, hasn’t engaged with young children, and although friendly with other dogs.
Poppet is looking for a home without them. We feel he would be best suited to an older couple or individual, and he would love a home outside of the city with access to a garden. Poppet is currently based in Hampshire and is ready to find him forever home.
